World population has risen from 2.5 billion people in the 1950s to 7.5 billion in 2017. This number will rise to 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.1 billion in 2100 (United Nations, 2017). At some point in time, our planet will not be able to sustain humankind due to climate change and the reduction in living space, food and biodiversity.
To overcome this problem, mankind has to look beyond its own planet and become an interplanar species. We therefore propose to inhabit Mars. This close by planet contains the bare essentials for human existence.
To successfully inhabit Mars and for humankind to thrive there, dwellings, communities and cities have to be designed and build. To make sure that the buildings are suitably adapted to Mars, a Martian vernacular architecture has to be established. This vernacular type should not only be able to protect against the harsh Martian environment, but also cater to social interaction between its inhabitants.
