Ut Renati

“Ut Renati” envisions the transformation of Chiesa Diruta, a historic ruin in Grottole, Italy, from a symbol of decay into a vibrant cultural hub. The design proposes enveloping the existing structure with a semi-transparent canopy, preserving its historical essence while providing protection from the elements. This lightweight framework covers the open ceiling, allowing natural light to permeate and maintain a connection with the surrounding environment.

Inside, the central nave is designated as the main auditorium, featuring a versatile deployable system that can function as seating during performances or be reconfigured to create additional floors for exhibitions and various events. The stage is designed without elevation, utilizing the picturesque hills of Matera, visible through the rear window, as a natural backdrop. The collapsed apse has been repurposed into an accessible terrace, offering panoramic countryside views. Additional amenities include bathrooms, backstage areas, a gift shop, and a bar on an outdoor roof terrace. A suspended walkway provides visitors with unique perspectives of both the church’s interior and the surrounding landscape, enhancing the overall experience of the historic ruins.
